Put History to Work

Internships give Georgia Southern History students the opportunity to apply research, writing, interpretation, and communication skills in professional settings. Students work with museums, archives, historic sites, libraries, community organizations, and other partners in Statesboro, Savannah, across Georgia, and beyond.

An internship can help you explore career possibilities, build professional experience, make connections, and discover how historical training works beyond the classroom.

Internship and Career Fair (November)

Every November, the Department of History brings students together with museums, archives, libraries, historic sites, public agencies, and community organizations at our annual Internship & Career Fair. Since 2013, the fair has given students the chance to meet professionals, explore career paths, and find internships and project opportunities in public history, archives, museums, preservation, digital history, research, and community engagement.

The fair is designed for students at different stages of their degree. Undergraduates can earn credit for internship work through HIST 4790, a three-credit course that may be repeated for up to nine credits toward the History major. Students in the Digital Humanities minor may also complete internship work through HUMN 3731. History internships typically involve at least 90 hours of supervised professional experience and combine workplace experience with academic reflection and documentation. The department鈥檚 internship agreement specifically describes the experience as practical training in public history and requires at least 90 hours of work.

The fair also connects graduate students with internship, project, and employment opportunities. Recent fairs have brought together students with organizations such as the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, Georgia Southern Special Collections, Fort Pulaski National Monument, the Statesboro Regional Public Libraries, and other museums, archives, historical organizations, and community partners throughout the region. Opportunities have included archival processing, digitization, collections work, interpretation, research, database management, public programming, and digital projects.

2026 Internship & Career Fair

Students do not need to arrive with an internship already in mind. The fair is an opportunity to meet potential hosts, learn what different organizations do, ask about current and future opportunities, and begin building a professional network.
